Reactions and my reply to them for the article at Kendasampige
ನಾನು ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ಏಜೆಂಟ್‌ನಾಗಿರಬಹುದು ಎಂಬ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಹಲವು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದಕ್ಕೆ ಕೊಂಡೊಯ್ದಿದೆ. ರಾಜೀವ್ ಗಾಂಧಿ ಆಗ ಮಾಜಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದ ಕಾಲ. ಅವರ ಅನುಯಾಯಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದು ನಂತರ ಅವರ ವಿರುದ್ದವೇ ಬಂಡೆದ್ದ ವಿ.ಪಿ.ಸಿಂಗ್ ತಮ್ಮದೇ ಆದ ಒಕ್ಕೂಟವನ್ನು ಸಂಘಟಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಕಾಲ. ಅವರ ಆಪ್ತ ಗೆಳೆಯರೂ ಮಾಜಿ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಮಂತ್ರಿಗಳೂ ಆದ ರಾಮಕೃಷ್ಣ ಹೆಗಡೆ ಅವರನ್ನು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿಗೆ ಕರೆತಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಜನತಾದಳ ಕಛೇರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪತ್ರಿಕಾ ಗೋಷ್ಟಿ ನಡೆದಿತ್ತು. ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತನಾಗಿ ನಾನು ಈ ಗೋಷ್ಠ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದ್ದೆ. ಅಮೇರಿಕದ ಯುದ್ದವಿಮಾನಗಳಿಗೆ ಡಿಯಾಗೋಗಾರ್ಸಿಯ ದ್ವೀಪವನ್ನು ತಂಗುದಾಣವಾಗಿ ಬಳಸಲು ಭಾರತ ಅನುಮತಿ ನೀಡಿದ್ದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಆಗ ಬಿಸಿಬಿಸಿ ಚರ್ಚೆ ವಿವಾದಗಳು ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದವು. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಅನುಮತಿ ನೀಡಿದ್ದು ರಾಜೀವ್ ಗಾಂಧಿ ಎಂದು ಅವರ ರಕ್ತಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಪ್ರತಿಪಕ್ಷಗಳು ಹಪ ಹಪಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೆ ಇದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬೆಳಕು ಚೆಲ್ಲಬಲ್ಲವರು ರಾಜೀವ್ ಸಂಪುಟದಲ್ಲಿ ರಕ್ಷಣಾ ಸಚಿವರಾಗಿದ್ದ ವಿ.ಪಿ. ಸಿಂಗ್ ಅವರೇ ಆಗಿದ್ದರೂ, ತಮ್ಮದೇ ಆದ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಕಾರಣಗಳಿಗಾಗಿ ಅವರು ಜಾಣ ಮರೆವು ಹಾಗೂ ಮೌನವನ್ನು ಧರಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಇದೇ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿ.ಪಿ. ಸಿಂಗ್ ಅವರ ಪತ್ರಿಕಾ ಗೋಷ್ಠಿ ಏರ್ಪಾಟಾಗಿತ್ತು. ನಾನು ವಿ.ಪಿ. ಸಿಂಗ್ ಅವರನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದ್ದು ಇಷ್ಟೆ ನೀವು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮೌನದಿಂದ ರಾಜೀವ್ ಗಾಂಧಿಯೇ ಅಪರಾಧಿ ಎನ್ನುವಂತೆ ವರ್ತಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೀರಲ್ಲ? ರಕ್ಷಣಾ ಸಚಿವರಾಗಿ ಆ ಕುರಿತ ಪೈಲ್ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಗಮನಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಿರಲಿಲ್ಲವೇ? ಹಾಗೊಂದು ವೇಳೆ ನೀವು ಮುಗ್ದರೇ ಎಂತಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡರೂ ರಾಜೀವ್ ಸಂಪುಟದ ಸಹೋದ್ಯೋಗಿಯಾಗಿ ನೈತಿಕ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮೇಲೂ ಇದೆ ಎಂದೆನಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲವೇ? ಇಂತಹ ಗಂಭೀರ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯನ್ನು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಪ್ರೆಸ್‌ನಿಂದ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿಸದೇ ಇದ್ದ ವಿ.ಪಿ. ಸಿಂಗ್ ಕ್ಷಣ ಕಾಲ ವಿಚಲಿತರಾದರು. ನನ್ನ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗೆ ಉತ್ತರ ನೀಡದೆ ಬದಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಹೆಗಡೆ ಕಿವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮೆಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಕೇಳುವಂತೆ ಉಸುರಿದರು, ಈ ಮನುಷ್ಯ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ಏಜೆಂಟ್‌ನಂತೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಾನೆ ತಕ್ಷಣವೇ ನಾನು ಆರ್ಭಟಿಸಿದೆ ಜೀವನವಿಡೀ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್‌ನ ಉಪ್ಪು ತಿಂದು ಗೆಳೆಯನ ಬೆನ್ನಿಗೆ ಚೂರಿ ಹಾಕಿ ಬಂದವರು ನೀವು ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ಸಿಗರಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ ನಾನು ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ಏಜೆಂಟೇ ಹೌದು. ಕ್ಷಣ ಮಾತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪತ್ರಿಕಾ ಗೋಷ್ಠಿ ರಣರಂಗವಾಯಿತು. ನನ್ನ ಪತ್ರಿಕಾ ಮಿತ್ರರು ವಿ.ಪಿ. ಸಿಂಗ್ ರವರ ದುರ್ವರ್ತನೆಯನ್ನು ಖಂಡಿಸಿ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಬಹಿಷ್ಕಾರ ಹಾಕುವ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದರು. ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಹತೋಟಿ ಮೀರಿದಂತೆ ಕಂಡಾಗ ಹೆಗಡೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಸಮಯ ಸ್ಪೂರ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿ ವಿ.ಪಿ. ಸಿಂಗರ ಪರವಾಗಿ ತಾವು ಕ್ಷಮಾಪಣೆ ಕೇಳುವುದಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಿ ಸಿಂಗ್ ಅವರು ನನ್ನ ವಿಷಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೀಗೆ ಹೇಳಬಾರದಿತ್ತು ಎಂದು ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಪಟ್ಟರು. ಈ ಘಟನೆ ನಡೆದ ಕೆಲವೇ ಕಾಲದ ನಂತರ ಭಾರತೀಯ ವಾಯುನೆಲೆಯನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಅಮೇರಿಕಾಗೆ ಅಗತ್ಯವಾದ ಅನುಮತಿ ನೀಡುವ ಕಡತಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿಂಗ್ ಅವರೇ ಸಹಿ ಹಾಕಿದ್ದರು, ಅಂದಿನ ಪ್ರಧಾನಿ ರಾಜೀವ್ ಅಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದು ಬಹಿರಂಗವಾಯಿತು. ಈ ಸಂಗತಿ ತಿಳಿದಿದ್ದರೂ ಮಾಜಿ ಗೆಳೆಯನ ವಿರುದ್ದ ಚಕಾರ ಎತ್ತದೇ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಆರೋಪಗಳನ್ನು ತಾವೇ ನುಂಗಿಕೊಂಡ ರಾಜೀವ್ ಗಾಂಧಿ ಅವರ ದೊಡ್ಡಸ್ಥಿಕೆ ನನಗೆ ಈಗಲೂ ಸ್ಮರಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಕೆಲವೇ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಮೊದಲು ದೊಡ್ಡಹಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ಪೊಲೀಸ್ ಗೋಲಿಬಾರ್ ಖಂಡಿಸಿ ಕಬ್ಬನ್ ಪಾರ್ಕನಲ್ಲಿ ಉಪವಾಸ ಮುಷ್ಕರ ನಡೆಸಿದ್ದ ದೇವೇಗೌಡರು ನನ್ನ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯಿಂದ ಕುಪಿತರಾಗಿ ನೀವು ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್‌ನ ಏಜೆಂಟರೇ ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಶ್ನಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಮುಂದೊಮ್ಮೆ ಬಂಗಾರಪ್ಪ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಮಂತ್ರಿಯಾದಾಗ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಜನತಾದಳದ ಏಜೆಂಟ್ ಎಂದು ಆರೋಪಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಯಡಿಯೂರಪ್ಪನವರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ಕೆಂಡಸಂಪಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾದ ಲೇಖನ ಓದಿದವರೊಬ್ಬರು ನಾನು ಯಡಿಯೂರಪ್ಪನವರಿಗೆ ಸಹಾನುಭೂತಿ ತೋರಿಸಲು ಅವರಿಂದ ಸೈಟ್, ಸೂಟ್ ಕೇಸ್ ಪಡೆದಿರಬಹುದೆಂದು ಆರೋಪಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರವರ ಭಾವಕ್ಕೆ, ಭಕುತಿಗೆ................ ವಂದನೆಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ, ಸಿದ್ದಾರ್ಥ...
Re: Dear Sri Siddharth, a few minutes ago I wrote a sufficiently long response to your graceful words but by that time my server had disconnected. So I am once again writing, this time a shorter one, since I feel that you are a good journalist. My only point was regarding what you said about America. I am no lover of any particular country and not a nationalist either, I follow Kuvempu in this matter, in a certain sense. But I want you to see some positive aspects of America. Today's America is not the old colonial America: it is a great experiment in the sense that it is a country made up of people from the rest of the world: it is a mini world. To a certain extent England today is emulating it in this respect. America has set the highest standard of democracy for itself (by the people, for the people, of the people), although ideals may not always materialise. Of which other countries can we say this? Nobody wants to go to Russia or China and seek their citizenship. Why? Let us make India a true democracy where all people can live comfortably and everyone can achieve his or her personal ambitions so that people from elsewhere can seek our citizenship. Child labour, utter inequality of opportunity, female foeticide--you name it and you find it in India. Let us put our house in order first so that no one would like to give adivice to us. Otherwise our sourness amounts to overreaction, and overreactions imply guilt. India has a long way to go; merely saying that ours is the largest democracy in the world is meaningless; if some other country says this, we should not feel proud. India cannot yet bear the mantle of holiness and say touch me not. If we are right, there is no need to be worked up about what another democratic nation said to us. People are confused and frustrated about corruption in India not about Lokpal versus Jan Lokpal. Elected Govt. has not shown any responsibility in handling corruption, instead it is merrily indulging in corruption. The present democratic set up don't give good choice to people to elect, people are forced to elect lesser evil person, not a good people representatives. So in that way democracy in India is failed experiment. Days of anarchy are not far away. Hope and Pray India will not get into disarry and third country does not take advantage of the situation - VidyaShankar...

And the stifling of people's voices? It was because of criticisms such as yours that America took such a long time to intervene in Libya. Now see what is happening in Syria? Do you approve of all these things? I have seen the murder of democracy in Yemen. When you criticize America don't forget the good things that it has done; this will make you a balanced person and your views will have the support of reason. After seeing his reaction to my article, I once again verified and cross checked my records and also had interaction with my journalist friends at New Delhi. I learnt through records that on August 12, 2011 ahead of fast threat by Anna Hazare, the US department spokesperson Victoria Nuland,in an official statement released has said " As you know, we support the right of peaceful,non violent protest around the world. That said India is a democracy and we count on India to exercise appropriate democratic restraint in the way it deals with peaceful protest". Immediately the very next day, Government of India has strongly objected to US "poking its nose into the internal affairs of India".[bracketed phrase is mine]. Immediately She retracted by saying that inaccurate reporting in India was the cause and she has excuded confidence in India's ability to manage its internal situation in consistent with democratic values. All of a sudden,John Mc cain,democratic party presidential candidate of 2008 elections emerges at New Delhi on a surprise visit,only to clarify that America neither gets involved nor has any intentions of doing so. However, following strong resentment from the Indian government, John mc ccain has to beat a hasty retreat, cancelling several of his meetings to some" dignitaries". It is not immediately known whether he had plans to meet the civil society members. Drawing inference from the Prime Ministers' remarks at parliament, India is emerging as a powerful country.it will have to be contemplated whether there is any power which wants to destabilize the government and the country. More than 100 countries attained Independence when India got freedom but none of them could reach the place where India reached. I discussed with Prof.Premashekar, a well known political thinker and writer. He is writing an exclusive article on this issue. Still, I wish that my doubts expressed in my article on US interference should remain as doubts only. Thanks Siddartha

Re: Can't agree more! This guy is totally biased and works like a press agent of that big-fat-corrupt gang called Congress. Anna's movement is not something that should be killed, but to be accepted, supported and worth dieing for. After all these years of bad rule how can people be confused about who is their well-wisher, utter bullshit. These kind of half-hearted, stupid intellectuals are more evil than goons.
